Best Cold Cream/Makeup Remover...and Cheap!

I want to share with you my new favorite beauty product: Jergens All-Purpose Face Cream.  When it says "all-purpose"--they're really not kidding! It is the BEST makeup remover I have ever used, it's a great moisturizer, and it lasts forever. And--in addition to all this--it is cheap: this large jar costs less than $4 at Wal-Mart (I know--right!?!?!.)  I have used this cream as a night-time moisturizer for a long time, especially in the winter when my skin tends to be exceptionally dry, but in doing some research on 1950s beauty regimens, I found that it was also used as a makeup remover.  So, I tried it one day and could not believe how easily it removes makeup, and how well it cleans your skin.  (Not to mention that it leaves your skin moisturized, and not dried-out like soap would.)  If your skin is very oily, you probably won't want to use this as a moisturizer, but it would still be an excellent cleanser.  It takes off all forms of makeup (even mascara and lipstick) with the greatest of ease.  Just liberally apply to your face and neck, let sit for about a minute, and wipe off with a warm, wet washcloth.  Trust me: you will NOT be disappointed! Pond's Cold Cream is probably the most recognized cleansing/moisturizing cream, and I haven't used it, so I can't speak to its effectiveness, but it's also more expensive than Jergens.  Besides, I'm completely satisfied with this, so why mess with perfection?  The only thing that may turn you off from this product is the smell.  It's not bad, but let's just say that it could be more pleasant.
My jar shows signs of frequent use
As a lover of the 40s and 50s (and of makeup and beauty products, in general), I have been trying to collect information on beauty routines and beauty "secrets" of that time period.  All instructional beauty books I have come across highly recommend using some kind of all-purpose face cream as part of an everyday beauty regimen.  I find it fascinating that women really had a regimen back then; I know that women today spend tons of money on beauty products, but do we really have a regimen? There are so many products out there, even if one wanted to establish a regimen, how would one know what to pick and where to begin?  And how much money would all these special serums and lotions add up to? Now, I never went to bed without removing my makeup, but I have never really had a "regimen."  (This is actually one of my "vintage housewife" goals: to establish and actually commit to a beauty regimen.)  Sometimes I would use Noxema, or some other cleansing cream, but I usually found myself still having to wash my face with good, old-fashioned soap and water afterwards in order to remove all the makeup.  I love the idea of ONE product being able to 1) dissolve and remove makeup, 2) clean my face, and 3) moisturize.  And what an added convenience that it's cheap!  Let me know what you think if you try it!

    1. I have used this prouduct for years so has my mother and her friend. Im almost 60. I dont look it. Its amazing and I love it. Best prouduct I have ever used in my life. Once I clean my makeup off with Jergens. I have a amazing glow. To this day I go because of this regime. Its a muti purpose product. They new what they were doing back in the day. That stays to fact today. You see we want to glow. So we need to keep products powders off are face that makes us look cakey well like clay. My mother always to me no dry powder on my face. Thank goodness I listened.

  2. The art on that container is brilliant! Also, I may have to try that... Can it undo the damage from washing one's face in Caney water? I am used to cleansing with Cetaphil (which also does a pretty darn good job of dissolving makeup, but I do occasionally find some traces of it on my toner-soaked cotton balls) but since moving home, that hasn't cut it for some reason.

  3. Haha! I don't know about the Caney water! I've never used Cetaphil, but I wear quite abit of makeup (not every day around the house, but out in public) and it wasn't until recently that I actually tried it as a cleanser. I couldn't believe how easy it made makeup removal! I use it liberally; leave it on about a minute, then wash off with a warm washcloth. It even quickly dissolves eyeliner and mascara...I really can't say enough good about it. I have also started using Witch Hazel in lieu of a manufactured toner, and I also really like it. (I got all these ideas from a vintage beauty book I found and have been amazed at how cheap and effective they are.) I occassionally will have some traces of makeup on my cottonball, but not if I actually do a good job of rinsing the cream off. Like I said in the post, it doesn't smell bad, but it could smell better. That's the only semi-negative thing I can think of.

  4. I also tone with witch hazel. It does a good job of attacking the last bits of nastiness without drying the face out. What title are you referencing?

  5. Liana, I just wanted to follow up in regards to the cleanser. While I couldn't find Jergens specifically, I secured a jar of Pond's Cucumber Cold Cream (the non-mentholated kind, as I am allergic to Noxema and the like). I have to say, I'm surprised that I haven't tried it earlier. I've only been using it for 2 days but so far it's been very, very good. It dissolved my makeup (one of those "24 Hour" fomulations) and I have to say that my skin feels softer and is overall much cleaner. Now, here's the truly educational part (for me, at least): cold cream is made out of mineral oil, which is actually *very* effective at drawing out and dissolving blackheads! Now, why didn't someone tell me that 15 years ago?

  6. Jess, like I said, I've never used Pond's but it couldn't be too differeneople our from Jergens. I am still shocked at how well it works every time I use it. I know what you mean, too, about people our age not knowing about this stuff...Also, I posted a couple of days ago about the book I was referencing in this post. I'm going to post about the facials as soon as I get the chance.

  15. I've always used jergens but recently am trying ponds. I thought ponds was more natural but they have the same ingredients. They both are great for my sensitive dry skin. I will alternate I guess since I'm torn on the decision.
